Marlborough Road, St Albans

Other Activities

Flower Group
The church flowers are donated each week by members of the congregation. Almost half are given in memory of a loved one, or to commemorate a special anniversary. The flowers are arranged by those giving them or by one of the Flower Group. After the morning service a rota of people distribute the flowers to those who are sick, are celebrating a special event, or are elderly and unable to attend church. A card of good wishes, assuring the recipient of the prayers of the congregation, accompany the flowers.
The picture is of part of the 2002 Flower Festival, held in April.

Ramblers Group
We are informal, all-age, multi-racial and ecumenical! While most worship at Marlborough Road, some come from other churches. Rambles are monthly, usually on a Saturday, and range from 4 to 10 miles in length. (Church notices give advance details of forthcoming rambles.) There is no formal membership - anyone is welcome to turn up and join in. We also enjoy an 'away weekend' each year, and an annual party for regulars.

Marlborough Theatre Club
The Club aims to enjoy and support all aspects of live theatre. We regularly organise theatre visits to see plays, musicals, comedies, ballet etc. Our favourite venue is the Royal National Theatre, but we also regularly support our local Palace Theatre at Watford. Occasionally there are trips further afield to Windsor, Oxford, Bath and Guildford.

Marlborough Readers
This reading group is for anyone who can join us occasionally or regularly.  We meet informally once a month on Monday evenings to discuss books we have read. Recently we have discussed Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Great Expectations, Quartet in Autumn and The Remains of the Day.

Music
There is a strong tradition of music at Marlborough Road. Most of the singing is supported by our fine organ, but there is usually one hymn in each service which is accompanied on the piano or keyboard, sometimes with other instruments. The organ is used as a teaching and practice instrument by the St Albans branch of the New School of Organ Studies, and of the St Giles International Organ School. An organ recital, presented by the NSOS in conjunction with the church, is given each Tuesday lunchtime at 12.30 (lunches available).
